Pyre

Impossible to forget
But hard to remember
Fire and beast transfixed
Boots covered in mud
Winter heart blistering
Hair rising at the back
Of your neck and wood
Climbing across the creek

Shadows will not protect you
Forest cover will not protect you
We cannot protect you
And still the bursting chest
Rib cage will hold it in
Yet only for so long

Which doors will open
How faint the call
Which carriage shall bother
With a road so unloved
The throat is calm

Wings and waves
Wings and waves

Our compassion is boiling
Like water in a tea kettle
Balled up papers of the
Best poetry ever written
Brimming from a wastebasket

Blue eyes reflecting back
In a mirror of your smile
Dust at my back patted out
In our embrace and a cool
Draft beneath our feet

How close yet have we come
One can dream to get so near
And yet achieve it in the embrace
About your bones unpausing
Holding out for wished upon
Delicious comfort

It was in your arms
Or a figment if my imagination exists
It was in your arms
Or a desperate theory
It was in your arms
Beneath the lamp
